Silverdale is an unincorporated area that developed with the growth of the Bangor Submarine Base and location of Trident Submarines in the area. The approximate population is 15,800. Silverdale has a plentiful supply of waterfront and view properties on the Hood Canal and Dyes Inlet with views of the Olympic Mountains and Mt Rainier. Silverdale was captivated in 1997 when a pod of orca came to Dyes Inlet and remained in the area for a month. Money Magazine voted Silverdale one of the top 100 places to live in the USA in 2007 for economic opportunity, good schools, and safe streets.

The schools are very good and home prices are affordable. Silverdale has the areas largest mall and is a major retail center in Kitsap County. Military and government related businesses flourish here because of the Bangor Submarine Base and Keyport Naval Station. Harrison Hospital has a large medical complex in Silverdale for emergency, mother - baby, and rehabilitation services. Old Town Silverdale by the water still has the feel of the sleepy village that existed before the expansion of the area Naval facilities. In old town there is a sizable marina and waterfront park. Every summer Silverdale hosts Whaling Days, a weekend festival that draws large crowds. Also on another summer weekend there are hydroplane races on Dyes Inlet.
