Bainbridge Island Real Estate - Bainbridge Island Homes - Bainbridge Island Community

Bainbridge ferry heads for SeattleAs an island community with deep historical roots in the development of the Puget Sound area, Bainbridge Island is a unique mix of a rural pastoral backwater community with a more-recent influx of upper middle class entrepreneurs and business people. With only an early '50s two lane bridge connecting the rest of Kitsap County at the island north end and the major Kitsap County ferry connection to downtown Seattle at mid-island, Bainbridge Island enjoys easier access to downtown Seattle than many Seattle suburbs, while also enjoying the benefit that access from the rest of Kitsap County is considerably more difficult. As a result property values on Bainbridge Island are about double the values in the rest of the County. The generally higher wealth and education of its residents help create more opportunities for business and a greater array of cultural and educational opportunities. It is a thriving and interesting community. Most Bainbridge waterfront homes now sell for more than $1 million.

Find out more about Bainbridge Island, Washington:

In 1841 Lt Charles Wilkes, USN, named the island after Commodore George Bainbridge, commander of USS Constitution in the war of 1812. In 1991 the small incorporated town of Winslow annexed the rest of the island, forming the City of Bainbridge Island. Bainbridge was a center for shipbuilding and logging in the past, with considerable ethnic populations of Japanese and Philipinos. Internment of the Bainbridge Island Japanese in World War II was the fictional subject of Island resident David Guterson's "Snow Falling on Cedars".
